I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead (3 out of 5 ain’t bad)

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead was a halfway decent flick. It was gritty and dark but it lacked decent dialogue and pacing. Clive Owen, Jonathon Rhys Myers, and Malcolm McDowell were good but it just didn’t live up to what I wanted it to. It was a hair above mediocre like the rating is on IMDB.

American Splendor (5 out of 6 comics)

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

I sat down and watched a movie today. The first time I’ve watched a new movie in a while. Last one was Hard Candy. I think. Anyways I watched American Splendor. It is the story of a man named Harvey Pekar, a man that made a comic about his horrible, mundane life as a file clerk at a hospital. Paul Giamatti played Harvey and the real Harvey narrated the movie. It was a pretty cool flick overall and I’d recommend it to anyone that likes odd movies.

I pulled a movie out of my case the other day to watch but I’ve yet to make time for it. Maybe tonight. It’s called I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead. I picked it up a long time ago because it has Clive Owen in it. Every flick I’ve seen him in has been good, excepting King Arthur but that wasn’t his fault. I got the movie out the other day because while perusing IMDB I found that Malcolm McDowell is in it as well as Owen. For those that don’t know, I loved A Clockwork Orange and for those that still don’t know, it is the film that McDowell is famous for. The reviews for the movie are not great but I’m still gonna check it out. Maybe tonight.

Here are some more pictures for you to view.

This is from the Elegant Gothic Lotita Panel that Lisa briefly attended and then made me go into to see…

As you can see there are a few guys in the mix… Dunno why…

This is Jesus. He comes to all the Texas cons.
(Note picture actually from Animefest 2007; I did not get a good picture at Ikkicon 2008)

These are also from Animefest.
Here’s The Ghostbusters.

This is Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop.

This is Greg Ayres on stage. He got to sing a song from a show that he did called BECK. The United Fellas performed “Moon on the Water” from the show.

These are from Onicon 2007.
This is Nabeshin (渡邊 慎一, Watanabe Shin’ichi) and I. He created shows like Nerima Daikon Brothers and Excel Saga. He dresses like Lupin III.

Xero Reynolds thinks Chris Patton is hot.

This is Christa, Jennifer and I at Onicon.

This is Jen and Lisa.

Ikkicon 2008 Part 2

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Friday we left Lisa’s at about 7:00 AM. We made a few stops along the way and hit a little bit of traffic in Dallas. We arrived in Austin at the North Austin Plaza at around 11:30 AM. We were unable to check in so we headed over to the Double Tree (about a third-mile walk) where the con was going on. We got our badges and I got my VIP badge. We grabbed some autographs from Chris Patton and headed for the dealers room. I went back to where Patton was signing and got Greg Ayres, Chris Ayres, and Josh Grelle’s John Hancock on some stuff. We then went back to our hotel and checked in. By this time we were rather hungry so we stopped at Chili’s on the way back to the con. It was rather yummy and we had wonderful service. That guy got a 30% tip. Jen and Edward went back to the room for a bit so Lisa and I went to see what was going on back at the con. We tried to go to a Women in Anime panel but due to schedule conflicts it was postponed. When Jen and Edward came back we got in line for an improv show. The two-hour show was awesome. I’m a big fan of improv comedy. Later we went to a panel held by Matt Greenfield called Anime BC (before cons). He gave us the history of Anime fandom in the US. It all leads back to He-Man and Texas. It was a pretty cool panel. After this we headed back to our room and crashed.

Saturday we arose around 9:00 AM. We made it over to the con at about 10:30 AM and went to a room to get more autographs. Because of a wreck that Wendy Powell was in she was unable to come down from her room causing the session to be postponed. Another session was going on in the next room so we headed over there. I got some stuff signed by Matt Greenfield and Tiffany Grant. I also bought a DVD of a movie that Tiffany is in. Will write a review of it when I make time to watch it. Once we all got our stuff signed we headed for the car and hit up Johnny Carino’s in Round Rock. More awesome service! Another big tip for our server. We then went to Target to kill some time and get some things we needed. We tried to talk Edward into wearing a skirt or some short shorts but he wouldn’t go for it. We kept calling him Normie because he was dressed normally and he didn’t fit in at the con. We made it back to the con for Chris Patton’s panel which was awesome as usual. He’s probably my favorite voice actor. We went our separate ways after his panel. Lisa checked out The Wallflower panel and Jen and Edward went for the dealer room. I headed up to the sixth floor for my VIP only pizza party with some of the guests. The others ended up eating at Fuddruckers (also between the two hotels). After I ate some Little Ceasers and hung out for a bit I went and got in line for Whose Line is it Anime?, a panel of improv comedy featuring voice actors. The others didn’t get out of Fuddruckers in time to make it so they went back to the room. The panel before the improv, a dance contest, went 30 minutes over, making us all mad outside. All of us in line cheered for them when they finally left the panel room. They didn’t know what was going on or why we were so happy that they were leaving. The imrov was awesome! Even better than the one the previous night. Mostly because it was a 18+ panel. Those always rock because there is so much that comes up in other panels that the guest has to say, “I can’t answer that because this is an all ages panel.” After that we decided not to go to Anime Hell and chilled in the room.

Sunday we got up around 10:00 AM. At about 11:15 AM the front desk called and informed us that we were supposed to check out at 11:00 AM. We hurried up and got packed and headed back over to the con. Upon realizing that nothing of interest was going on today we got back in the car and headed for Maudie’s Milagro. This is probably the best Tex-Mex place that I’ve ever been to. Absolutely amazing food and service. After stuffing ourselves we headed back to Sherman.

In short it was a mediocre con but still a lot of fun. I can’t wait for A-Kon in May. More pictures of the stuff I bought and got signed later today.

Taxes and Themes

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

I filed my taxes and filled out my FAFSA tonight. It was boring. I’m only getting $158 back this year. Oh well. I’m gonna get to working on my new theme soon; I promise. I’m gonna go get some food now though. Mama Rosa’s mini pizzas here I come.

PS Sheryl Crow is rocking my ears tonight. Takes me back to the days when I had a few tapes to comprise my music collection. They were (as best I recollect anyways): Green Day’s Dookie, Blues Traveler’s Four, Sheryl Crow’s Tuesday Night Music Club, and possibly Hootie and The Blowfish’s Cracked Rear View. Other tapes I had/borrowed from dad over the years that I actually listened to tapes were: Eve 6’s Eve 6, Nirvana’s Nevermind, Stone Temple Pilots’ Core and Purple, and Pearl Jam’s Ten, Vitalogy, and VS to name a few.
